When it’s not working, we often limit our response to doubling down on fixing faulty parts, when we should also focus on strengthening the relationships between the parts so they connect better as a whole.
The whole is not the sum
of its parts. It's the
relationship
between them.
Insight emerges from the relationship of the whole, not from a reduction to the parts.
The ability to keep discovering new ways to make things work emerges from our relationship with the whole.
The generation shaped by the world war developed relational skills to establish the standards needed for rebuilding. Later generations used technology to extend those inherited skills, reducing the world into ever-smaller parts. Today, we need relational skills to reconnect to function more effectively as a whole. We can no longer rely solely on relational skills to create standards of comfort and safety. We also need the relational skills of the whole.
When you feel comfortably in control,
your attention is probably focused entirely
on fixing faulty parts.
Unless you also pay attention
to the relationships that connect the whole,
it will soon stop working.

My corporate career began with adapting face-to-face practices used to build high-performing teams for high-performance online communities. When these skills made me the best person to support our children, I moved into home education. Through this work, I learned to teach my own children and many others how to improve by strengthening the relationships between all the technical parts. Today, as attention increasingly shifts to doubling down on fixing faulty parts, my sons and I, supported by Debbie, offer LifeSkills21.club: a place to improve by strengthening the relationships between all the technical parts so they connect better as a whole.
